Throughout the expansive scope of human history, we’ve borne witness to the ebb and flow of nations, the collision of civilizations, and the profound repercussions of conflict. Yet, in the midst of tumult and upheaval, a timeless human longing for peace has endured.
According to the Global Peace Index 2023, there are records of 20 countries with the least peace in the world in which Nigeria is the 19 country in the list. From the ancient Greek philosopher Plato’s vision of a utopian society to the modern-day United Nations’ peacekeeping efforts, the quest for peace has been a constant thread throughout human history. We have sought peace through diplomacy, and negotiation. Yet, despite our collective efforts, war and conflict continue to plague our world.
At the 18th General Assembly of the United Nations on September 20, 1963, John Kennedy shared in his speech about the importance of peace and the role that the United Nations could play in achieving global peace. He also called on the world’s leaders to work together to address the challenges of the time, such as poverty, hunger, and disease. Kennedy’s words are as relevant today as they were when he spoke them. The world continues to face many challenges, but we must never give up on the dream of peace. We must continue to work together to build a more peaceful and just world for all.
Today, on this Global Day of Influence, it is very important for the world to take a moment in time where the power of influence can be harnessed to create a more peaceful world. GDI is designed to create opportunities and have conversations about the use of influence for good. In the digital age, social media has served, and is still serving as a boost to the power of influence through influencers, top leaders, organisation, and the world at large. Recent events like #EndSars in Nigeria, the unrest in Gaza, and the war in Ukraine further explains a big gap in sincere leadership around the world today.
On this Global Day of Influence, it is important to call all individuals, organisations, Governments and media to use their power to promote peace.
Can We Achieve Global Peace?
Global peace cannot be achieved without the collective action of individuals. We all have the power to influence those around us, to promote understanding and tolerance, and to challenge the narratives that fuel conflict.
By syndicating messages of peace, we can foster constructive dialogues, and champion organisations dedicated to resolving conflicts harmoniously. The path to global peace is undeniably challenging, yet it is a collective journey that we must participate in together.
